<p>When people consider the overweight epidemic sweeping our population, most of us tend to think about fast foods, processed meals and microwaveable foods.  All of these are designed to save us one important commodity, time.  We don&#8217;t have time to have meals that are prepared at home, eaten in a leisurely fashion at a table as a family.  This is one of the side effects of our economy, where it takes two people to earn enough to provide us with all the things that have become necessities.  Dietary supplements have become a way of life and many people are getting a lot of calories from liquids instead of following a healthy diet.</p>
<p>It is estimated that as many as one-third of our population is overweight, or just down right fat.  And many of us are on a roller-coaster ride of diets and recriminations to try to lose the excess weight.  Losing weight is not easy, it takes a combination of diet and exercise to do it right.  Diet reduces the number of calories we take in and exercise causes the metabolism to go up to burn the calories we take in and hopefully, a few more.  To help us with our diet, there are thousands of supplements available that will do all kinds of advertised wonders.  Many of them give the impression that losing weight is easy, if you use this or that product.  None of them will work by themselves and you will not get the physique shown by the models, unless you include a reasonable diet and exercise.</p>
<p>Supplements are available as pills or liquids, depending on what they are designed for.  There are only a few that have been evaluated by the FDA.  So, it is up to the individual to do his or her homework and find out which supplements might be the right one to use.  Read the labels, find out what the side effects are and make sure that you can live with them.  If you have a medical condition, you certainly want to avoid any supplements that might cause the condition to worsen.  It is also a good idea to consult with a medical professional before starting on a strenuous diet.</p>
<p>It has become popular to supplement a diet with liquid supplements to make sure we get all the nutrients we need on a daily basis.  Everyone from infants to old folks now have some kind of liquid supplement.  Except for infants, I cannot think of any reason to drink a can of anything to make sure I get nutrients that are not available in a healthy diet.  Again, it is important to read the labels.  Pay special attention to the number of calories and the amount of sodium you are drinking.  It is important to distinguish between healthy drinks and those that merely sound healthy.  There are some drinks that have as much as one-fourth to one-third the daily calorie requirement.  These calories usually are in the form of sugar added to make the drink taste good.</p>
<p>Weight loss is not easy.  If it were, there would be no overweight people in the world and a billion dollar weight loss industry would not exist. But you can lose the weight if you use a sensible diet and exercise program and combine those with persistence, commitment and dedication.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>These 4 tips (that are proven to help people eat less food and overall calories) are from a fascinating book called &#8220;59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot&#8221; by Richard Wiseman.  I think you&#8217;ll find these tips very helpful if you&#8217;re looking to control your calorie intake and reduce your body fat.</p>
<p>These tips have been around for a long time and were tested in scientific studies.  They are quick and easy to implement and I thought they were VERY interesting as a way to lose weight.</p>
<p><strong>Tip #1 to Eat Less</strong>:  Use smaller plates, bowls and spoons  &#8212;  Several studies have confirmed what older folks have know for a long time.  It has been proven that the size of the plate, bowl or spoon that you use can directly influence how much food and calories you consume.  Bigger plates cause people to eat more.</p>
<p>Richard Wiseman, in the book 59 Seconds, talks about one study conducted where party guests were randomly given either 17 or 34-ounce bowls and 2 or 3 ounce spoons, and allowed to help themselves to ice cream. It was found that the party guests given the large spoons and large bowls ate 14% and 31% more ice cream respectively, than the people using the smaller spoons or smaller bowls.  How&#8217;s that for an interesting statistic?</p>
<p>Another study at the University of Pennsylvania used a bowl of M&#038;Ms  left in the hallway of an apartment building with a sign next to the bowl that told people to help themselves to the M&#038;Ms. Some days a tablespoon sized scoop was used in the M&#038;Ms and on other days, a larger scoop was used in the bowl.  The researchers found that the larger scoop caused people to take TWICE the amount of M&#038;Ms on average compared to the people that had used the smaller scoop.</p>
<p>Other studies referenced in the past that showed that people who used larger plates consumed more calories than those using smaller plates.</p>
<p>These studies indicate that using smaller plates, bowls, and silverware can cause you to inadvertently reduce your calorie intake.  This also means saying NO to seconds and thirds!</p>
<p><strong>Tip #2 to Eat Less</strong>:  Eat your food slowly.  &#8212;  You&#8217;ve probably heard that eating slower can help you to eat less because it gives time for the fullness signal to reach your brain and shut off your appetite before you&#8217;ve eaten too much.</p>
<p>This may be true, but a study found a twist on this old saying!</p>
<p>According to Mr. Wiseman in the book &#8220;59 Seconds, a study at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center had overweight participants eat a meal at 3 different speeds:</p>
<p>a)  their normal rate<br />
b)  half their normal rate<br />
c)  their normal rate at first, followed by half their normal rate (normal-slow combo)</p>
<p>The results were interesting&#8230;  Eating at the slower rate caused the men to eat less, but not the women (that&#8217;s weird!).  However, the 3rd group that combined the normal pace at first with the slower rate after that caused both the men and women to have a large reduction in their appetite and eat less.  The normal-slow combo was found to be more effective than just the slow-only group.  I have no idea why it worked out this way, but the results are interesting.</p>
<p>Mr Wiseman stated that the lesson learned here to eat less is &#8220;to start at your normal speed but savor each and every mouthful&#8221;.  I think what he means is to slow down and enjoy each mouthful of food without overeating.</p>
<p><strong>Tip #3 to Eat Less</strong>:  Chocolates or other sweets  &#8212;  According to the book &#8220;59 Seconds&#8221;, a series of experiments conducted in offices compared putting chocolates right on people&#8217;s desks vs placing the chocolates six feet away. In another experiment, the chocolates were put inside either transparent or opaque jars. </p>
<p>The results showed that when the chocolates were on the person&#8217;s desk instead of 6 feet away, people ate on average 6 more chocolates per day per person.  Also, the chocolates in the transparent jars were eaten 46% more quickly than the opaque jars. </p>
<p>This experiment just proves&#8230; food out of sight is food out of mind!  Every nutritionist in the world will recommend never having junk food around your house at all.  If the junk food is not there, you&#8217;re never tempted by it and you&#8217;re forced to only eat healthy foods.  But, if you are following a diet from &#8220;<a href="http://tinyurl.com/25pv5pf">The Truth About Abs</a>&#8220;, then you can use your weekly cheat meals to eat junk food at a restaurant. That way, junk food is never in your house to begin with!</p>
<p><strong>Tip #4 to Eat Less</strong>:  Avoid eating by the television  &#8212;  Studies have found that when people are distracted by TV, movies, games, or other distractions, they eat significantly more than when they don&#8217;t have distractions.  In one experiment mentioned in the book &#8220;59 Seconds&#8221;, people who were more absorbed by a movie ate significantly more popcorn compared to those who were paying less attention to the movie.</p>
<p>In another experiment, people who actively listened to a detective story during lunch (being distracted by the story), ate 15% more food than those who sat in silence during their lunch.</p>
<p>The lesson to be learned &#8212; ditch the TV and avoid other distractions when you eat your meals.  Instead, focus on your food!  Go back to trick #2, enjoy every bite of your food and you will naturally consume less calories while enjoying your food more.</p>

<p>Until recently salt was considered a basic commodity &#8211; salt was just salt. Lately however, salt, particularly sea salt, has received a lot more attention as a nutritional supplement.  The health benefits of sea salt include claims from improving digestion to imparting &#8220;harmonious energy,&#8221; and are credited to minerals and trace elements in sea salt that are refined out of table salt.</p>
<p>Sea salt by itself is generally far from being pure.  Impurities are its big selling point and sometimes gives it identifying colors or flavors.  An example would be grey sea salt that has tiny bits of clay in it, or Hawaiian sea salt that has iron-rich red volcanic clay added to it. Lately, there are all kinds of gourmet sea salts available.  You can now get dead sea salt, himalayan, kosher or any kind of sea salt you want.</p>
<p>Information from the Mayo Clinic indicate that sea salt and table salt have the same basic nutritional value and both consist mainly of two minerals, sodium and chloride. However, regardless of this fact, sea salt is often marketed as the more natural and healthy alternative. The real differences between sea salt and table salt are in the taste, texture and processing, not chemical makeup.  A major difference is the cost of the salt.</p>
<p>The importance of minerals in the diet can&#8217;t be dismissed; after all, the iodine commonly added to table salt helps prevent thyroid conditions. But there&#8217;s little I’ve found little research that proves sea salt better for you than ordinary salt and claims are usually made on personal preference.  </p>
<p>The biggest difference I’ve found is in the way salt is produced.  Sea salt is produced by evaporating sea water.  This usually leaves small trace amounts of minerals and elements depending upon how much is in the water.  With no further processing the minerals add flavor and color to sea salt. </p>
<p>Ordinary table salt usually comes from underground salt deposits. Table salt is more heavily processed to eliminate trace minerals and usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. Most table salt also has added iodine, an essential nutrient that appears naturally in minute amounts in sea salt. </p>
<p>Sea salt and ordinary salt contain about the same amount of sodium chloride by weight. Nutritionally, your body only needs a couple hundred milligrams (mg) a day to stay healthy.  But, sodium is an ingredient in most processed foods and most people get far more (read this as too much) sodium than they need, mostly from processed foods.  </p>
<p>Regardless of which type of salt you prefer, you should keep sodium consumption between 1,500 and 2,300 mg of sodium a day if you&#8217;re a healthy adult. If you have medical conditions, you should follow your doctor’s recommendations concerning sodium consumption.  People with high blood pressure, and anyone middle-aged or older should aim for the low end of that range.</p>
<p>Salt as we have known it for years, is a pure white free flowing spice that is essential to flavor our daily foods.  Now, there are all kinds of gourmet salts with different flavors, colors and textures available from a variety of sources.  Color and flavor usually depends on where and how the salt is produced.</p>
<p>Many gourmet chefs, in homes and in restaurants, have learned to appreciate and distinguish between the distinctive qualities of the many varieties of sea salts and how these salts enhance the flavors and finish of foods.</p>
<p>The bottom line is that sea salt may not be any healthier than ordinary table salt.  If you prefer sea salt and believe that it has some health benefits, then it may be worth the added cost.  If you like to experiment with different colors and flavors, then find a good source where the quality is high and advice is available.</p>

The favourite example of this kind is certain dairy products and certain animal meat, which form the part of saturated fat. Hence one needs to reduce fatty food by avoiding saturated fatty foods and intake unsaturated fatty foods. Some of example of unsaturated fatty foods is skimmed milk, peanut butter, boiled cooked chicken meat etc.</p>

<p>3)      Make sure that your intake of sugar is minimal because once you eat a bar of chocolate, you crave for more. Although sugar does not do as much destruction as fat, it is always good to be on the safer side.</p>
<p>4)      Intake of water should be high. A person striving to lose weight needs to drink as much water as possible. This way the nutrients are kept at a balance. When a person drinks a lot of water, the body also functions properly. A half ounce of water is required for every pound of body weight.</p>
<p>5)      Eating a lot of fruits and vegetables increase the fiber content in one’s diet. When fruits and vegetables are taken you normally feel full and do not feel like eating much.</p>
